Tibet is vast and sparsely populated. It is not easy to travel from one to another as each scenic spot is far apart, and a lot of time is spent on transportation. Due to the special geographical location of Tibet, it is necessary to prepare enough time for a trip to Tibet. Generally, it is more appropriate to prepare for 7-10 days. If your itinerary is tight, at least 4 days should be prepared.
Time spent on the road should also be taken into account. From mainland China, it takes about 1-2 days by train and 1 day by plane. Departing from Kathmandu, it takes about a day for a one-way flight; if it is an overland trip, it takes about 5 days to reach Lhasa. You can estimate the days it will take in total based on your own round-trip transportation, then, choose the right tour package.
The top things to do in Tibet are mainly to visit Buddhist temples and enjoy the scenery. The Buddhist temples are mainly in Lhasa and Shigatse.
In Lhasa, you can visit the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple. Tibet Museum and Norbulingka are also worth seeing. When the sun goes down, take a stroll around Barkhor Street. And, you can plan a one-day trip to Namtso lake from Lhasa, to see the beautiful sunset.
In Shigatse, there is the world's highest peak, Mount Everest. If you want to enjoy the spectacular view of Mount Everest, Shigatse is a destination you must not miss. Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse is one of the "Four Great Monasteries" of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. This historical temple is not very crowded and well preserved. Compared with the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, it is more peaceful here. Also, you can't miss the beautiful Yamdroktso Lake on the way to Shigatse.
And for Kailash of Ngari, it's recognized by the world as a sacred mountain. Large numbers of Hindus go there for pilgrimage every year. Ngari is the most sparsely populated area in Tibet and has a unique plateau natural feature. With an average altitude of more than 4,500 meters, it is known as the "roof of the world". Here, you can also admire the magnificent clay forest of Zanda and explore the mysterious kingdom of Guge.
Nyingchi, known as little Jiangnan in Tibet, locates in the southeastern part of Tibet, in the middle and lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River. There is the deepest canyon in the world - the Brahmaputra Grand Canyon; Dragsum Tsho, the only national 5A-level natural scenic spot, also a famous sacred lake and holy place of the Red Sect of Tibetan Buddhism; and Peach Blossom Valley, to witness the stunning beauty brought by the peach forest that stretches for dozens of kilometers every mid-March to mid-April.
Yes, we can quote you with airfares according to your departure location and help you book the domestic flight tickets at the BEST price. For international flight tickets, it's better to book on your own for getting the notification the first time if there's any change. However, if you feel inconvenient to place a booking, we can certainly do it for you.
If your schedule is not tight, traveling to Lhasa by train is definitely the best choice. It's more affordable and helps you better acclimate to the altitude with enough time than traveling by air. However, it takes more than 40 hours to travel to Tibet by train from some cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, etc. And some tourists start to suffer from altitude sickness at Tanggula Mountain Pass because of long-distance travel. In this scenario, you can divide the train journey into two sections. Stop-over in Xining or Xi'an for a day or two, and then continue to Tibet. In addition, on the section of the Tibet train from Golmud to Lhasa, you will see the stunning plateau scenery, which will make you really feel like traveling on the road.
However, if you have less time, you can choose to fly to Lhasa. It's worth mentioning that, no matter you travel to Tibet by plane or train, do not wash your hair and take bath on your first arrival day.
The scenery of Tibet is different in every season and Lhasa can be visited all year round. Traditionally, April to Oct is the best time frame for touring Tibet.
Nyingchi is full of peach blossoms in late March and early April, and rhododendrons are in full bloom in June. The pastures in Lulang are very beautiful in July and August, and the autumn scenery in October is even more beautiful.
Namtso is suitable for visiting from June to December. The best time to go to Ngari is from June to October for relatively warm weather at this time.
Mount Everest can be visited all year round. Usually, we recommend June to October because sufficient oxygen in summer makes your body feel better but the peak may not be seen during the rainy season in July and August. Taking the price factor into consideration, June and early September are more cost-effective. The scenery during this time is great, but the vehicle prices and accommodation are lower.
It depends on the season, month, number of tourists, accommodation, tour guide, meal standard, and other factors.
The cost of a 4-day join-in group tour is about US$450, and the 8-day Tibet tour package is about US$930, plus round-trip transportation and personal expenses, so the total cost is even more. The one-way flight ticket from Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou to Tibet are about US$490, and the one-way flight ticket from Chengdu, Chongqing to Tibet is about US$250. The one-way fare for a soft sleeper on the train varies from US$180 to US$300 according to your departure city in China.
If you are traveling with less than 3 people, it is recommended that you join our group tours, as you can share travel costs such as tour guide fees and transportation with a group of international tourists.
