Niyang River means “Tears of the Goddess” in the Tibetan language. It is also regarded as the mother river of the Kongbo people. This river on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau stretches 307.5 kilometers with a drainage area of 17,500 square kilometers. It is one of the major tributaries of the Yarlung Zangbo River, with a water volume second only to the Parlung Zangbo River. The Niyang River originates from Cuomuliangla on the western side of Mila Mountain, flows from west to east, and merges into the Yarlung Zangbo River near Cemeng in Nyingchi County.
The riverbanks of the Niyang River are rich in vegetation, with an excellent ecological environment. Can you imagine? The Niyang River Scenic Belt is home to numerous wild bird species and is also a famous wintering area for black-necked cranes in Tibet! The water resources of the Niyang River Scenic Belt are also ideal for rafting and yacht experiences. As the only yacht dock on the Yarlung Zangbo River, this location serves as the starting point for the water route into the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon.
In the upper reaches, the river channel is relatively narrow, winding through the mountains, with lush forests on both sides. The light blue waters, set against the backdrop of blue skies and white clouds, create a mesmerizing view. In the lower reaches, the valley widens, and the water flow becomes gentle, forming vast riverine wetlands. When spring arrives, the wild peach blossoms and rapeseed flowers at the foot of the mountains, the willows along the riverbanks, the dense primeval forests on the hills, and the majestic snow-capped peaks in the distance blend together to create a unique and magnificent natural landscape.
The Niyang River Scenic Belt is also a paradise for photography enthusiasts. It is open to the public for free—just pull over at a roadside viewpoint, and every frame will capture breathtaking beauty. From an aerial view, the stunning scenery will leave you in awe.
