There is a special post office established over 2 decades at Everest Base Camp(5200m), which is also the highest post office in the world, called Heavenly Tibet Post Office - Everest Store. When tourists from all over the world come to visit Everest, they would like to send a postcard with their most sincere blessings to their friends and family at the top of the world. Due to the impact of natural weather, the Everest Theme Post Office is only available around 6 to 7 months a year.
History
In May 2001, in order to meet the mailing needs of tourists, mountaineering enthusiasts and traveler adventures, China Post Office - Tingri County Branch set up a tent at the foot of the north slope of Mount Everest, as a temporary service point. Every year, it provides services to climbers and tourists from all over the world, selling various postcards, souvenir books, and picture albums to visitors.
On April 18, 2008, in order to meet the postal needs of people from all walks of life during the Beijing Olympic torch relay and summit of Mount Everest, a temporary post office was established to provide postal communication services, which is the predecessor of the Everest theme Post Office at present.
On June 6, 2017, the new Everest Post Office was upgraded from the previous tent to a container type, which is more solid. Named Heavenly Tibet Everest theme post office. It was successfully selected into the Guinness Book of World Records as the "Highest Altitude Post Office" less than two months later, directly eclipsing the previous record holder of the post office at the village of Kazanshijin, a town in northern India, with an altitude of 4440 meters.
In September 2022, with the strong support of the Tingri County Government, in accordance with the requirements of the integrated development of the theme "post and travel", the Tibet Region Branch of China Post Group Corporation launched the relocation and reconstruction plan of "Heavenly Tibet Theme Post Office - Everest Store". The construction overcame the impact of bad weather, high altitude, and lack of oxygen. They used environmentally friendly recyclable materials and completed construction progress on schedule. Then the post office with the integration of tradition and innovation, green and environmental protection, service, and culture officially opened! The new Everest Post Office is modeled after the undulating mountains, echoing Mount Everest.
