Below, we’ll introduce these two main routes to Tibet in detail.

Travel to Lhasa via Mainland China

There are no direct flights from Slovakia to China. You may need to take connecting flights to reach a major Chinese gateway city like Beijing or Shanghai. Many Slovaks choose to depart from Bratislava Airport (BTS) or nearby Vienna International Airport (VIE), which offers connecting flights to major Chinese cities.

Bratislava/Košice - London - Beijing/Shanghai - Lhasa

You can depart from Bratislava Airport (BTS) or Košice International Airport (KSC), and connect through London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to reach Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) or Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). The entire journey typically takes 22–24 hours and costs around €580. Once you arrive in Beijing or Shanghai, you may take the opportunity to explore famous sites before heading to Lhasa, such as the Great Wall and the Forbidden City in Beijing or the Bund and Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai, to experience the diverse culture of China.

From Beijing or Shanghai, you can then fly or take a train to Lhasa. There are daily flights from Beijing and Shanghai to Lhasa, with flight times of 4 hours and 8 hours respectively, and prices ranging from €350 to €400. Alternatively, you may board the train to Tibet, which offers stunning views of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and allows gradual acclimatization to the high altitude, helping reduce the effects of altitude sickness.

Slovakia - Vienna - Beijing - Lhasa

You can travel from Slovakia to Vienna, Austria, by plane, train, or bus. From Vienna International Airport (VIE), there are 5–6 direct flights to Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) every week. The direct flight takes 9 hours and 20 minutes, with fares around €680. Alternatively, you can find connecting flights from Vienna to Beijing, which are generally cheaper, ranging from €450 to €540.

From Beijing to Lhasa, there are usually direct flights available each morning and afternoon. This flight takes 4 hours and 20 minutes, with fares of about €400. You also have the option to take the train from Beijing to Lhasa. The Z21 train departs daily from Beijing, covering a 3,757-kilometer journey to Lhasa in about 40 hours. A soft sleeper ticket for the train costs around €164.

Slovakia - Vienna - Shanghai - Lhasa

There are 5 direct flights each week from Vienna International Airport (VIE) to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). The direct flight takes 10 hours and 45 minutes, with fares around €700.

From Shanghai to Lhasa, you can take a flight with a short stopover in Chengdu (1 hour) or Xi’an (2 hours), taking about 7-8 hours in total at a cost of around €350. You can also take train Z164 from Shanghai to Lhasa, which takes 44 hours and 32 minutes. The Shanghai-Lhasa soft sleeper costs around €165.

Travel to Tibet via Kathmandu

Nepal shares a border with Tibet, and Kathmandu has numerous international flights from/to Europe, making it a popular route for entering Tibet. So, how can you travel from Slovakia to Tibet via Kathmandu?

Slovakia - Kathmandu

First, you will need to fly from Slovakia to Kathmandu. There are no direct flights from Slovakia to Kathmandu, so you can travel via Vienna. From Vienna International Airport (VIE), you can transfer through Hamad International Airport (DOH), Istanbul Airport (IST), or other transit airports to reach Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu. The entire journey takes around 12 hours, with a ticket cost of about €660.

Kathmandu - Lhasa

Next, you can choose to enter Tibet by air or overland.

If you're short on time and want to reach Lhasa as quickly as possible, you can take a direct flight from Kathmandu to Gonggar Airport (LXA) in Lhasa. Currently, there are flights to Lhasa operated by Himalaya Airlines every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The flight time is about 1.5 hours, and the ticket costs about €450. It's recommended to sit by the window on the left side of the plane for a stunning view of Mount Everest, where you can admire the majestic peak from the sky.

Necessary Document

Tibet Travel Permit

All foreign visitors to Tibet are required to obtain a Tibet Travel Permit, which can only be applied through a local travel agency, on your behalf. You need to provide scanned copies of your valid China Visa and passport. It is recommended to submit the materials at least 20 days before your departure to allow enough time for processing. If you plan to visit the Nagri region, it is advisable to submit the documents at least one month in advance. China Visa

If you plan to enter Tibet from mainland China, you need to apply for a China Visa at the Chinese Embassy in Bratislava. You may need to fill in related info online and make an appointment with the Chinese embassy, then go for an interview with the tourist invitation letter and tour itinerary. China Group Visa

If you intend to enter Tibet from Nepal, you need to apply for a Chinese Group Visa at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. Please note that a group visa requires at least four people to apply together and usually takes about three working days to obtain.
