What to Wear When You Visit Tibet in June?

If you are coming from a tropical part of the world, you may need light winter clothes when you visit Tibet, especially during nighttime. During the daytime, you can wear casual long-sleeved shirts like T-shirts, as there is a lot of sunshine. However, since Tibet is known as the roof of the world, it is more exposed to UV light, and for this reason, you need to wear sun hats and sunglasses as protection from UV light. You should also have your coat in handy for the weather may fluctuate during the day.

Acclimate Yourself

Many people usually experience altitude sickness, particularly when traveling to Tibetan areas 4,500+ meters above sea level. That means that the oxygen level is far lower than the oxygen level in the plain. Moreover, the air pressure in Tibet is far lesser than when you are near sea level. Hence, to prevent experiencing severe altitude sickness, you need to have in handy an oxygen tank. If you have health conditions like asthma, heart disease, and high blood pressure, please consult your doctor first before you make a decision to go to Tibet.

Activities in Tibet During June

Tibet Tours are available during June, although June is not the peak season for tourist arrival. It is best to visit Tibet during the first and second weeks of June, as mentioned above, rains mostly fall during the night; hence, you can still enjoy daytime activities like hiking and trekking during the later weeks of this month.

Once you arrive in Lhasa, you can stay here for a few days to acclimate yourself to the high altitude. In Lhasa, you can visit its historical and religious landmarks and attractions, including the famous Potala Palace, Barkor Street, Nobulingka, and Jokhang Temple. So usually 2 to 3 days of staying in Lhasa is advised.

Other Awesome Places to Visit during June

Tibet is not without its natural wonders. Aside from enjoying the historical places of Lhasa, you can get out of Lhasa in June and take a tour of Namtso Lake, which is located some 4,718 meters above sea level. This amazing lake is the highest saltwater in the world. This lake is around 250km away from Lhasa. It would be good to visit Namtso Lake during the daytime. If you prefer enjoying sunset or sunrise, you may choose guesthouses near the lake for overnight.

Tibet is not just Lhasa, and there are still many other famous landmarks and places to visit outside of Lhasa. You can visit Tsedang, which is situated around 3,100 meters above sea level and 190 km southeast of Lhasa. This lovely town is near the famous Samye Monastery. This town has warmer weather than Lhasa with mainly sunny days during June.

You can also visit Shigatse, Gyantse, Yamdrok Lake, and most notably, the Everest Base Camp (EBC) and Mt. Kailash. Yamdrok Lake is around 4,500 meters above sea level, known for its exquisite beauty and size. You can reach this lake within 2.5 hours from Lhasa along the Friendship Highway on your way to Shigatse. By the way, June is also the month for the locals to have Linka activity, which is similar to the junket we usually have. You will see the local people sitting in the woods, on grass, or beside the stream to enjoy the pleasant season.

Shigatse, on the other hand, is the second-largest city in Tibet. With 3,900 meters above sea level, this city has an average temperature of 22 °C (72 °F) and an average night temperature of 8 °C (46 °F). Here, you can see some famous landmarks and use your stay to acclimate yourself to the weather at EBC if you plan to behold the majestic Mt. Everest. If you plan to go further to  Mt.Kailash, Shigatse is also the only way to pass through.

It is best to visit EBC and Mt. Kailash in June during the first two weeks, right before the onset of the monsoon season. The temperature at EBC averages around 17 °C (63 °F) during the daytime and 5 °C (41 °F) during the nighttime. It is not advisable to visit Mt. Kailash during heavy monsoon days (Although the Saga Dawa Festival is held in June) because heavy rains and snow may dampen the roads leading to this mountain right at the start of the monsoon season.

Conclusion

June presents a unique opportunity to explore the breathtaking landscapes and cultural treasures of Tibet. With mild daytime temperatures and the monsoon primarily affecting the evenings, it is an ideal time to embark on treks and tours, such as the renowned Mt. Kailash trek or a visit to Everest Base Camp.
