Shangbala means "Shangri-la" in the Tibetan dialect. Shangbala Hotel is a wonderful hotel for those looking to be in the heart of the old town of Lhasa. While their rooms are very standard, but the location is superb -- a few steps to Jokhang Temple and a nice amble to the local market.

Some people think it's noisy, but if you like to stay in the Tibetan quarter and feel the local atmosphere, it's a good choice. Chinese breakfast and western breakfast are provided for breakfast, yak butter is recommended. Summit cafe is right next to it, offering great coffee and pastries.

There are 100 well-appointed guest rooms. The room was small but clean. All with a TV set, telephone, mini-bar, private bath, and shower. Besides, there is an elevator, meeting room, sauna, business center, Chinese and western restaurants.
